The Frederick

Salt Lake City, UT

Salt Lake City’s downtown has a long tradition of craftsmanship, faith, and community identity. The Frederick builds on that lineage with a contemporary residential building that takes its cues from its neighbor, the historic B’Nai Israel Temple. Rather than imitate the temple’s architecture, the design studies its proportions, material presence, and rhythm, especially the distinct arched openings, and reinterprets them through a modern lens.

Home to 110 studio, one-, and two-bedroom residences, the building is shaped around light, clarity, and livable simplicity. The unit layouts prioritize efficient planning, views toward the city, and a sense of calm away from the street. On the ground level, the architecture reinforces the pedestrian experience by creating a strong urban edge and a respectful dialogue with the surrounding block.

The Frederick is not intended as a statement piece; it is designed as a long-lasting addition to the neighborhood - one that’s rooted in place, mindful of its history, and built for the next generation of downtown residents.
