Washington DC is home to one of the country's most distinct city plans. Designed by Pierre L'Enfant, DC is organized as a series of angular avenues slicing through a traditional city grid, all leading directly to the White House and US Capitol Building. Union Heights is situated along Maryland Ave. with a direct visual connection to the nation's capital. The design incorporates this idea of slicing through the city with a series of dramatic 5-story walls that carve through the building, opening the two residential courtyards to the city.
